Greetings, folks! I'll be in midtown Manhattan next month and was wondering if there're any boxes around, just south of or in the southern part of Central Park (50th to 86th street)? I only see clues for two on LbNa - one much further south of the island (1st street) and the other further north. Happy hunting! Fern Sprite in the Old Dominion

Well, there's the newly placed Tuttle Creek box, the Konza Prarie Outlook box,
and the Pillsbury Crossing box.

You are talking about Manhattan, Kansas, right?

Sorry about that, I should have been more specific. That's Manhattan as in New York City.

There will soon be a letterbox in Greenwich Village, hopefully within
the next month. No guarantees, though, as I am in Los Angeles and am
relying on non-letterboxing friends to place it in their Manhattan
store for me. I will post it on the database as soon as they get that
stamp carved... -Q

There were at one time more boxes in NYC, but with security being
tight in most areas of the city, particularly the area you refer to,
most of them have either been pulled or confiscated by the
authorities. Be careful letterboxing in NYC -- they are very
suspicious of folks looking around behind bushes and in cracks of
buildings, and are not very forgiving when they find out you are
only playing a game.

SpringChick:

I heard about this story from a "mutual friend" and still don't understand why the FBI followed your trail. Were you the last letterboxer stamped into the logbook? I would think they would have traced the box to the placer but maybe the FBI didn't want to take a trip that far north!

Anyway - thanks for taking one for the team!! I'm sure you were an admirable opponent!

Have fun and just get out there & box!!! [And avoid the FBI at all costs!]

Thanks for the tip on letterboxing protocol in the big apple. I can understand they might be a bit touchy. I think I'll just enjoy the shows this trip.

So cool! I'll check the clues list before I head to Manhattan. By the by, I'm coming from Richmond, VA, but my sister whom I'm meeting is from LA - Van Nuys area. Great place to visit.

I was the last one to log into the book and naive enough to note my
city and state (along with a sig stamp that says "springchick")-- I
guess that was easy enough to search out on the web. The individual
who placed the boxes was smart enough not to identify themself in the
log book.

Lesson learned: When stamping into boxes in questionable locations,
don't use name, trail name or give location information.

The FBI and NPS have confiscated some down here in DC/MD/VA. So it's
best to be discreet in this area.
Big Brother is watching us right now.
Waving hello to that lonely guy who has the letterboxing detail.

Wow! How do I get the letterboxing detail? Think of what it would do to my F-count!

LOL Big Siblings are the obvious. Maybe we should watch out for
Little Sibling. They can hide under the covers much easier. Less
lumps.

I have planted the one remaining downtown letterbox, which is doing
fairly well. There will be two more soon, though they are far more
likely to be short lived. The Red and Grey box was still there the
last time I was up in W. Heights, and I have planted another in the
Bronx, but those two are far from where you'll be. Happy hunting,
and watch out for snakes.

Is the story The Little Red Lighthouse Under the Big Gray Bridge have
anything to do with the Red & Gray Letterbox?

I don't think it would be very sporting to answer that question.
I've never actually heard of that story. What is it?

It's a children's story about this little red lighthouse under the George
Washington Bridge on the New York side.
I read this to my children who are now 42, 39, & 32.

That's the first thing I thought of when I saw the name of the lettrbox. I would imagine that's what the placer had in mind.

The Italian For beginners Box is not "south of the island". It's in Manhattan. If you are traveling by train, it wouldn't be a big deal to look for it.
